More About Ashley Toivola
Clinical Interests:
I am interested in both 12 step based (abstinence), Medication assisted treatment approaches and harm reduction modalities for the treatment of substance use disorder diagnosed individuals. I entered the field to further develop an understand of the effects of substance use on the brain and behaviors and continue to be intrigued by the long-term effects as well as the emotional toll that Substance use has on the individual who uses substances and the person of support for that individual.
Clinical Approach:
I tend to use a motivational interviewing approach to counseling. I find it is important for the individual to be able to identify the deeper aspects of the reasons for use. Once that has been discussed a cognitive behavioral therapy approach is often the approach used to help develop the behaviors, mindset, and motivation that individual desires to live a healthier life.
Hobbies:
I could be considered a home body as I do most enjoy spending my free time at home with my family. I am a big fan of all thing’s horror, thriller, and criminogenic. I can often be found with a good horror/thriller/crime novel or movie. If I am not doing that then I am out on some adventure with my little ones, riding bikes, boating, camping, ect.
