More About Dr. Cara Peterson-Fuchs, PsyD

Clinical Interests:

I believe therapeutic progress happens in a safe, empowering, and non-judgmental environment, and that the relationship between therapist and client is key to creating lasting and meaningful change. My main goal as a therapist is to meet you where you are, cooperatively assist you in identifying your goals for treatment, and provide a safe, comfortable and collaborative space where you can feel genuinely seen and heard.

As your therapist, I aim to be warm, compassionate, encouraging, and honest. I’m interested in exploring with you how your past affects your present life, your relationship with yourself and others, and your inner narrative. I will help you explore how all of the systems within which you exist contribute to your overall life experience and how understanding these system dynamics can help you to create strategies to improve your life, your relationships, and ultimately improve your overall mental health. I am here to accompany you on your journey towards healing and personal growth, and I look forward to supporting you in reaching your goals!

My clinical Interests are broad and varied but I do have a passion for working with children and adolescents, neurodiverse populations, women’s issues and anxiety related disorders.

Clinical Approach:

In my clinical practice, I have had the privilege of working with diverse populations facing various mental health concerns. As a result, my approach is eclectic and rather than adopting one methodology for all individuals and issues, I draw from a variety of methods to create a tailored approach for each individual and situation. I integrate psychodynamic approaches, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, narrative therapy, mindfulness, and psycho education into my work where indicated.

As a therapist, I specialize in:

  • Providing trauma-informed care to individuals who have experienced distressing events and are seeking support in healing and recovery.
  • Utilizing cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques to help clients identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, promoting positive change.
  • Incorporating dialectical behavior therapy strategies to assist clients in managing intense emotions, improving interpersonal relationships, and building coping skills.
  • Implementing mindfulness-based interventions to cultivate present-moment awareness and enhance emotional regulation, reducing symptoms of stress and anxiety.
  • Conducting couples therapy sessions to address communication issues, conflict resolution, and intimacy concerns, fostering healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
  • Offering family therapy services to support families in navigating challenges, improving communication, and strengthening bonds.
  • Treating anxiety disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder through evidence-based therapeutic approaches.
  • Addressing symptoms of depression by providing empathetic support, exploring underlying factors, and developing coping strategies to improve mood and functioning.
  • Supporting individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in processing traumatic experiences, reducing distressing symptoms, and reclaiming a sense of safety and control.
  • Assisting clients in coping with adjustment disorders related to significant life changes or transitions, helping them adapt and thrive in new circumstances.
  • Addressing relationship issues, including conflict resolution, trust-building, and intimacy concerns, to promote healthier and more satisfying interpersonal connections.
  • Facilitating exploration of self-esteem and identity development issues, empowering individuals to cultivate self-awareness, self-acceptance, and personal growth.
  • Administrating and Interpreting comprehensive psychological assessments to evaluate cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning as well as identify and diagnose various mental health conditions.

Hobbies:

When I am not working I enjoy spending time with my family, my dogs and my fish. I also enjoy spending time outdoors gardening, as well as going hiking, golfing, swimming, and kayaking. To unwind and find relaxation, I indulge in activities such as reading, painting, and writing.
