More About Derek Daanen
Clinical Interests:
I have received my Master’s Degree from Marquette University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. My training during school involved inpatient hospital work for about 2 years. My most recent experience has been in various adult day treatment programs for the past 7 years; this involved both individual sessions and group sessions multiple days a week with the same client (PHP and IOP programs). I have had advanced training in addressing OCD and related anxieties, Trauma Counseling, Depression, Emotional Dysregulation and Interpersonal Conflict needs.
Clinical Approach:
Given my advanced training in DBT, Behavioral Activation, Exposure & Response Prevention, and Prolonged Exposure, I tend to use a few different approaches depending on what would be most effective for the expressed concerns. A common theme with my approaches is discussing how individualized emotions, behaviors and thoughts all impact each other and one’s environment/support system. I want to help my clients gain tools and insights so they can engage in life in a meaningful and values orientated path.
Hobbies:
I would say some of my hobbies depend upon the seasons. In the summer months I enjoy being outside; boating and being on the water is certainly enjoyable for me. I also enjoy downhill/alpine skiing in the winter months.
