More About Florian Burfeind
Clinical Interests:
I have experience providing short- and longer-term individual, couples and group counseling to diverse clients with a wide range of mental health issues and life concerns. Areas of particular interest include anxiety, depression, chronic pain and chronic illness, physical injury recovery and disability, grief and loss, spirituality, spiritual/religious abuse and trauma, life transitions, career changes and vocation, LGBTQ issues, trauma, family-of-origin issues, infertility, foster parents and blended families, and relational issues.
Clinical Approach:
I feel honored to walk alongside my patients as they navigate life’s challenges, move through change and transformation, and celebrate the joys of life. Counseling is a space the therapist and patient create together for the benefit of the patient. A sacred space for reflection, honest and sometimes hard questions, tears and lament, laughter and joy, awe, and hope. To be supportive in this space I draw from various clinical approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). While some of the work in counseling may be focused on solutions and behavioral change, some of it may also touch on deeper issues, wounds, longings and meaning. I have received training in Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy and am passionate about working in a culturally sensitive way with the patient’s spirituality and addressing spiritual issues when my patients request this.
Hobbies:
I enjoy walking my two dogs Gilly and Fedelma, reading books about Christian mysticism and spirituality, fixing up my house and gardening, having conversations with friends over a meal, and writing. As a transplant from the Netherlands to this part of the country and the Midwest (via Chicago and Washington state) I love exploring all that the local area has to offer – food, culture, nature and history! And I am excited to get to know you and how I may be able to support you in this season of your life.
