More About Jill Johnson (Mathison)
Clinical Interests:
I work with adults (18 and up) who are experiencing depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety. My experience with DBT also helps me work with those who have difficulty regulating their mood, difficulty being present in their life and/or difficulty interacting with others. This includes those with borderline personality disorder. Additionally of special interest to me are the areas of grief/loss, shame, self esteem and self compassion.
Clinical Approach:
For a DBT client, I am adherent to Marsha Linnehan’s Dialectical Behavior Therapy . This includes a focus on mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. For other clients, I draw from several approaches that include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution focused therapy and emotion focused therapy. I also have a strength based, systems approach in which I am looking at a client’s strengths and the ways experiences (past and present) impact them.
For all clients, my primary clinical approach is creating a nonjudgmental space that allows a client to feel comfortable talking about their concerns. It is important to me that I offer empathy and validation while also asking questions that help a client to grow toward creating the changes they want in their life.
Hobbies:
I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, watching sporting events and traveling.
