More About Lu Ann Weiss

Clinical Interests:

Having grown up on a farm in rural NE Iowa, I am deeply passionate about serving the greater Hutchinson community. I have worked with people of various ages, races, genders, and religions. Still, I am drawn to rural individuals’ unique needs and experiences.
I have worked with rural adults who have common diagnoses such as major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), life transitions and adjustments, and caregiving stressors. In addition, I have worked with adults who have agoraphobia (fear of leaving a space that is considered safe).
I am also interested in using strengths-based approaches to work with grade school children to break down barriers to fulfilling relationships and educational experiences. My experiences include working in day treatment settings with children who have Autism and trauma-related experiences.

Clinical Approach:

I work with clients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy(CBT) and Narrative Therapy techniques (NT). CBT is a research-supported treatment that focuses on the connections between emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. NT works to separate the client from their problem using the client’s strengths and sense of purpose.
The client’s therapy plan and goals are built collaboratively (client and therapist). The plan may incorporate mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal skills and utilize tools such as storytelling, writing, play, art, or outdoor experiences.

Hobbies:

My favorite activities are working on my parents’ farm and foraging for blackcap raspberries in our local park. I also love being lakeside in the summer and watching the WNBA (Lynx, Aces, and Fever). When it is cold outside, I like reading and painting.
